Tandoori Paneer Hot Dog

Tandoori Paneer Hot Dog

My love for fusion food continues with this recipe of Tandoori Paneer Hot Dog.  I am always looking for ways to Indianize various popular global foods.  My son loves grilled tandoori paneer, and I am always experimenting and using it in different dishes.  This was a total experiment of flavors and textures but was a huge hit with the family.

Components of Tandoori Paneer Hot Dog

Tandoori Paneer- Paneer pieces are marinated in tandoori spice mix and oil and then grilled.

Sauteed Green and Red Peppers– The peppers are cut lengthwise and then sauteed with some Indian spices.

Caramelized Onions– Yellow onions are cute lengthwise and sauteed in oil till they are dark brown in color.

Spicy Tomato sauce– We will make an easy spicy tomato sauce to pour over the ingredients and tie the flavors together.

Hot Dog Bun– This is the essential ingredient that holds everything together.  For this recipe, it is important to use good quality hot dog or sausage bun available in the supermarket.  We are filling the bun with a few different ingredients so its important to have a sturdy base.

Alternatives to grilling paneer

My preferred way of grilling paneer is on an indoor electric griller by Cuisinart.  I find it very quick and easy to use and you absolutely don’t need it for this recipe.  If you want the grill marks on the paneer pieces, you can use a stove top grill pan.  For a non-grill mark option, cooking it in the cast iron pan also works great! And of course, you can always cook it in a nonstick pan. It will still taste great!

Key features of this recipe

Vegetarian. This meal can easily be made Vegan.  You can use Extra Firm or Firm Tofu in place of paneer and vegan butter instead of butter.

Quick and easy meal. You can make the sauce and marinate the paneer earlier in the day. At dinner time, just grill the paneer and sauté the vegetables.   Dinner is ready in under 30 minutes!

  • For Serving
  • 8 Hot Dog or Sausage Rolls (good quality)

  • 2 tablespoons Butter

  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed

  • Salt (omit if using salted butter)

Method

  • Grilled Tandoori Paneer
Cut the block of paneer in 14-15 long pieces. In a shallow wide glass bowl mix oil, tandoori masala and red chili powder if using. Gently toss the paneer in this oil and spice mixture. Mix with your clean hands till all the pieces of paneer are coated in the spices. Cover and refrigerate till you are ready to grill.
I use an indoor electric griller to grill the paneer pieces. Heat the grill and add the paneer pieces. Flip and cook on atleast 2 of the sides till you have nice grill marks. Remove from the grill and set aside.
  • Spicy Tomato Sauce
Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a saucepan. When heated, add chopped onions and garlic and cook for 5-6 minutes till the onions soften. Now add the can of crushed tomatoes, grated ginger, salt, red chili powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, haldi and salt. Cook on medium flame for 7-8 minutes. Add garam masala and sugar. Stir and turn off the flame.
  • Sauteed Peppers
Cut the peppers lengthwise in ¼ inch thickness. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a non stick pan and saute the peppers on high heat for 4-5 minutes till they get some color but still have a crunch. Now add salt, red chili powder, coriander and cumin powder. Stir and turn off the heat.
  • Caramelized Onions
Cut the onions lengthwise in ¼ inch thickness. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a non stick pan and saute the onions on high heat for 6-7 minutes till they are slightly golden brown in color. Now add salt, stir and turn off the heat.
  • Serving
    Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.
Melt butter and add crushed garlic to it.
Add grilled paneer, sauteed peppers, onions and tomato sauce as per preference to a hot dog or sausage roll. Place all the assembled rolls on a baking sheet, face side up. Brush the tops liberally with garlic butter.
Place the buns in the pre-heated oven for 5-6 minutes till just heated through. Serve hot with a side of extra Spicy tomato sauce.
