These Gulab Jamun cookies were a total experiment that was a huge hit with the family. I bought a packet of pre-made gulab jamun mix to make gulab jamuns for my kids’ school event. I had only used half of that packet and decided to make cookies with the other half. I already have a Gulab Jamun Cake recipe on the blog that uses the pre-made mix. I literally patted my back for trying Gulab Jamun Cookies with the pre-made mix. The cookies were so easy to make and tasted delicious- crisp on the outside and slightly chewy on the inside with all the gulab jamun flavors and no frying!
These cookies would make a great addition to your festival mithai box for gifting. Move over Nankhatai, here come Gulab Jamun Cookies!
Grab your aprons and let’s get started with this Gulab Jamun Cookies recipe, a perfect fusion of traditional Indian flavors with a modern twist that will make you fall in love with them.
What is Gulab Jamun?
Gulab jamun is possibly the most loved Indian dessert. They are deep-fried dumplings, made of milk powder and soaked in rose water, cardamom flavored sugar syrup. My mom makes the best gulab jamuns in the world! They are so soft and sweet and just melt in your mouth. I am not that great at making gulab jamuns so I will stick with what I do best- baking, therefore this cookie recipe!

- 1 cup Gulab Jamun Mix
- ¼ cup + 1 tablespoon ghee
- 2/3 cup Sugar
- ¼ teaspoon cardamom powder

How to make Gulab Jamun Cookies
Here are the easy steps to make these eggless cookies that require less than 15 minutes of hands-on time.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Prepare 2 cookie sheets by lining them with parchment paper. In a small bowl heat the milk in the microwave till warm. Add saffron strands to the milk and let it rest.
- In a large bowl combine ghee and sugar. Mix it with a spoon for 2-3 minutes. Add all-purpose flour, gulab jamun mix, cardamom powder, and saffron milk to the bowl. Combine using your clean hands. The dough should come together easily and should not be crumbly. Add 1-2 more tablespoons of milk if needed.
- Pinch small pieces of the dough and roll and flatten with your palms. This recipe will make 20 gulab jamun cookies. Place 10 dough balls on one parchment-lined cookie sheet. The cookies will spread a bit so make sure there is enough room between the cookies. Add slivered pistachios or almonds to the cookie balls and press them down a bit.
- Bake in a preheated oven for 15 minutes. The bottoms should be brown, and the top should get some color.
- Remove the cookie sheet from the oven. Let it cool for 5 minutes and then remove the cookies on a cooling rack with the help of a spatula. Once completely cooled, store in an airtight container at room temperature.

FAQs- Gulab Jamun Cookies
This recipe is egg-free (eggless) but cannot be made vegan in my opinion. The recipe has a pre-made gulab jamun mix that contains milk solids, therefore making it unsuitable for vegans.
The pre-made gulab jamun mix already has rising agents in it so the cookie is not like a shortbread. It will spread while baking in the oven.
I have only tried and tested this recipe with Gits brand gulab jamun mix but I am confident that the other brands will also work.
These turned out so delicious!!! Thank you so much for sharing it.
Thank you Priti! I am so happy to hear that 🙂
Can you substitute butter instead of ghee?
Hi Kiran- Yes, you can. Ghee just provides a more authentic gulab jamun flavor.
