How to make Homemade Garlic knots from pizza dough
Follow these steps to make this flavorful and easy garlic knots recipe:
Making the pizza dough
This garlic bread recipe uses a basic pizza dough so we will start by making the pizza dough. Proof the yeast, add all the ingredients, and knead the dough till soft and pliable. I use a stand mixer to do this part, but you can use your hands. Just note that it will take a bit longer to knead a soft dough.
First rise
Leave the dough, covered to rise in a warm place for 1 hour till almost double in size.
Make the garlic spread
Since these are garlic knots, we will use butter, grated garlic, and Italian seasoning to make a spread that is brushed over the bread. To make this recipe vegan, you can easily use Vegan butter.
Roll and shape the bread
The dough is divided into 16 parts and each part is rolled into a rope about 9 inches in length. The rope is tied into a simple knot and the ends are tucked in. The garlic spread is then brushed over the shaped knots.
Second rise
The shaped dough is placed on a parchment-lined cookie sheet, covered with a kitchen towel and left to rise for 30 minutes.
Bake
It is baked in a 400 F degree oven for 20-23 minutes till the tops are dark golden brown. The baked knots are then again brushed with some more garlic/butter spread.
1. Pizza dough rolled and tied into a knot
2. Knot place on a baking tray and tucked in
3. Garlic butter
4. Knots brushed with garlic butter
Recipe tips to make Garlic knots at home
- For a semi-home made version, use store dough pizza dough to make the garlic knots at home. Remove the pizza dough from the refrigerator 1/2 hour prior to rolling and shaping.
- I have used Active dry yeast in this recipe. It is different from Instant yeast. Active dry yeast needs to be proofed in warm water as the recipe indicates. I also keep my yeast container in the refrigerator once opened and replace it every 6 months. The quality of yeast really makes a huge difference.
- If you are not a fan of garlic, leave out the garlic and brush the dough with butter and a choice of seasonings.
Garlic knots are so versatile- serve it with pasta dinner, with a light soup & salad dinner, or as a bread accompaniment to your holiday festive meal. The knots are small enough in size so everyone grabs a piece and there is no cutting or sharing involved!
