Churro Cookies Recipe

Churro cookies

Hey there, fellow cookie lovers! I’m super excited to share with you my latest baking obsession: Churro Cookies!

My daughter loves cinnamon treats, churros being her favorite. Churros are a deep-fried treat and require some work to make at home. So, I thought, why not create a churro-flavored cookie?  My kids are cookie monsters and enjoy the Churro flavors, so I was sure they would enjoy the combination.  And of course, they loved the cookie and we added another winning cookie recipe to our cookie-making repertoire.

To whip up a batch of these heavenly Churro Cookies, you’ll need just a handful of simple ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry. We’re talking butter, sugar, vanilla extract, all-purpose flour, baking soda, salt, and a splash of milk to bring it all together.

So, what are you waiting for? Let’s preheat those ovens, grab our mixing bowls, and get ready to bake up a batch of these irresistible Churro Cookies. With each bite, you’ll be transported to churro heaven – crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside, and absolutely bursting with flavor. Let’s get baking, friends! 🍪✨

What are Churros?

Churros are a popular fried dough pastry that originated in Spain. They are typically made from a simple dough consisting of flour, water, and salt, although variations may include ingredients like sugar and oil for flavor. The dough is piped through a star-shaped nozzle, creating long, ridged strips or loops that are then deep-fried until golden brown and crispy on the outside. Churros are often dusted with sugar and cinnamon, giving them a sweet and slightly spiced flavor.

For our Churro Cookies, we make a buttery sugar cookie dough and then dunking the dough balls in melted butter and a cinnamon sugar mix.  The cinnamon sugar mix caramelizes when baked and forms a nice crust over the cookies.  All the flavors and ingredients used to make Churros, but in a cookie form!

How are Churro Cookies different than the cinnamon Snickerdoodle Cookies?

I have a recipe for Snickerdoodle Cookies on the blog, so you may ask, how are these Churro Cookies different? Snickerdoodle cookies have Cream of Tartar and/or white vinegar that gives the cookies their signature tang. These Churro Cookies do not contain any cream of tartar. They are also richer and butterier than the Snickerdoodle Cookies.

Step-by-step guide to making delicious Churro Cookies

Follow these steps to make this easy and delicious churro cookies recipe:

  1. Start by using an electric mixer to blend together the butter and sugar until they’re creamy. Then, add in the vanilla and keep mixing until everything’s smooth.
  2. Next, add the flour, baking soda, and salt to the mixture and keep mixing until it all comes together into a dough. If the dough seems too crumbly, you can add a tablespoon of milk to help it bind together better.
  3. Preheat your oven to 350°F (190°C). While it’s heating up, line two cookie sheets with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  4. In a small bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon and set it aside – you’ll need it for later.
  5. Now, use a small ice cream scoop to portion out the cookie dough. Roll each portion into balls, then dip them in melted butter before coating them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Place the coated dough balls onto the prepared baking trays, and gently flatten them a bit with your hand.
  6. Pop the trays into the preheated oven and bake the cookies for 14-15 minutes, or until they’re golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Once they’re done baking, let the cookies cool on a wire rack before serving. Enjoy your homemade churro cookies!

Recipe tips to make Churro Cookies

  • The butter and sugar should be properly creamed before adding the other ingredients.  This incorporates air and makes the cookies light and fluffy.
  • The dough should be scooped using a small cookie scoop and shaped into rounds using your palms. The dough balls should be generously coated in cinnamon sugar.  DO NOT skimp on this part.
  • I dipped the cookie dough balls in melted butter before rolling them in cinnamon sugar. I find that doing this helps adhere the cinnamon sugar better to the dough and also provides more caramelization. If you think that’s a lot of butter, you can skip this step.
