When the seasons begin to change and there is a slight chill in the air, it always feels good to eat a warm bowl of oatmeal. I remember eating a bowl everyday after my two kids were born. This recipe of Apple Pie Oatmeal made in the Instant Pot is one of my favorite oatmeal recipes.
I have always stayed away from instant oats and making rolled or steel cut oats on the stove top takes a long time. I used to make it in the slow cooker/crockpot and put it on low for 8 hours at night before bed, and would have cooked oatmeal the next morning. Not sure why, but sometimes the oatmeal would boil over and I would be left with a sticky mess to clean up later. Gone are those days with the Instant Pot!
Instant Pot really makes the process so easy. If your family is in the habit of eating oatmeal for breakfast, this is perfect for you. You can put all the ingredients in the instant pot, go get ready and by the time you return, your breakfast is ready!
A note about cooking time: For this recipe, I have cooked the oatmeal on High pressure for 11 minutes with Quick release. If you cannot get to the Instant pot on time to quick release the pressure after the 11 minutes, reduce the cooking time to 10 minutes. Let it go to NPR (Non pressure release) for 8-10 minutes.
Steel Cut vs. Old Fashioned Oats
Steel cut and old fashioned rolled oats (rolled oats) are the same whole grain oat, and carry the same nutritional values, it’s just that they are processed differently.
Steel cut oats are less processed by steel blades, making them chunkier and take longer to cook as compared to old fashioned oats.
Old fashioned oats are oat kernels that are steamed and then rolled into flakes, then toasted, creating a flatter surface so they cook quicker.
The liquid to grain ratio and the cooking times in the recipe card below are for Old fashioned oats because that’s the type of oats I have at home.
For Steel cut oats use:
3 ½ cups liquid (water or any type of milk or combination thereof) to 1 cup oats. Cook it for 12 minutes on High with Quick Release.
Toppings and mix-ins for Apple Pie Oatmeal
To make apple pie oatmeal we have used flavors of cinnamon and maple syrup. But when it comes to topping your oatmeal, the possibilities are endless. Some other suggestions would be:
Fresh berries, almond and honey.
Banana and peanut butter.
Pumpkin puree, pumpkin spice and maple syrup.
The recipe calls for toasting the oats in butter for a few minutes. This give a nice flavor to the oats and I would recommend doing it but if you are short on time, you can skip this step and still end up with a perfectly delicious bowl of oatmeal.
This recipe is Vegan and Gluten- free (make sure the oats you use are gluten free).
